How often you need to service your transmission May 14, 2023Leave a comment

Until the gear start malfunctioning, many car owners may not know that just like the engine, their vehicles transmissions also need to checked and serviced.

Your automobile transmissionis complex and one of the expensive components in the vehicle. Proper maintenance can prevent it from braking down unexpectedly and help it to last long.

Automatic transmission routine service may include Automatic transmission fluid ATF and filter replacement. Flushing may also be required at times.

When to service your transmission

The car owner’s manual and the workshop repair manual contain full details on the period in months and vehicles usage in miles when the transmission should be serviced. When the transmission fluid should be changed varies depending on the type of transmission in the vehicle, the type recommended of ATF and the nature of the activities the vehicle in question is used for.

On the average, and for most vehicles that use universal ATF such as Dextron III, manufacturers recommend replacing transmission fluid every 40,000 to 60,000 miles under normal driving conditions. If the vehicle is being driven under severe driving conditions that may place a lot of additional stress on the vehicle and the transmission such as always driving through heavy traffic, using the vehicle for towing other vehicles and so on, then the servicing period will be shorter.

Filled for life transmissions

The automatic transmissions and differentials on many modern vehicles also use specially designed and fully synthetic Automatic Transmission fluids. These transmissions are called filled-for-life because according to the manufacturers, ATF changing is not required on them under normal driving conditions . The fluids are just to be checked periodically.

However in the case of severe driving conditions as described above, the fluid should be checked and changed according to the service technician’s recommendation.

Conclusion

Changing your transmission fluid after the gear has already started malfunctioning is like medicine after death, the damage is done already and the repair will then be an expensive one instead of a preventive maintenance.’ Therefore for your transmission  to last very long, always check your owner’s manual, it contains full details about the type of transmission fitted into your car, type of ATF it use and when it should be changed.
