When should car’s brake be checked?
You need to have your car’s brakes checked whenever you visit the workshop for routine maintenance or if you observe any abnormal signs or symptoms in the braking system which may include the following.
BRAKE MALFUNCTION LIGHTS ARE ON
Malfunction indicator lights are there on the dashboard to warn the vehicle’s users that some faults have been detected on the vehicle and a visit to the repair shop is necessary to avoid a major breakdown. So if any of the above lights is on while you are driving, you need to take the vehicle to the workshop to have the brakes checked.
BRAKE DRAG
This occurs when some of the brakes are binding or not releasing completely and it looks like something is holding the car down even after you have released the brake pedal. This can be because the parking brake is out adjustment, sticking parking brake cables, cracked or distorted brake pad, stocked oh frozen piston etc.
BRAKE PULL
This is what happened when you applied the break and your car start pulling to one side. This can be as a result of cracked or distorted brake pad, stocked oh frozen piston, scored brake disk etc
LOW OR SPONGY BRAKE PEDAL
This is when you applied the brake and your brake pedal is too soft or travels almost completely to the floor. This can happen as a result of leak in the brake system in the system, a faulty master cylinder warned brake pad, warned brake shoe etc.
HARD PEDAL BUT INSUFFICIENT BRAKE
This happen when you apply the break and the pedal is hard but the brake is not effective. It can be as a result of leak in the brake system, a faulty master cylinder, warned or glassed brake pad, scored brake disk etc
NOISE FROM THE BRAKES
This happen when you apply the break and noise is heard from the brakes. It could be as a result of warned brake pad, warned brake shoe, glassed brake pad, scored brake disk etc.
The Bottom Line
Driving a vehicle with malfunctioning brakes will cause further damages to brake system, the tires and can result in an accident. So if you observe any of the above brake malfunction signs while driving, please take the car to a repair to have the brakes checked and fixed.
